James Cook University Hospital

The Scope

Receptek were commissioned by contractor Interserve to present a design proposal to the NHS Trust for the fitted joinery at the all-new Endeavor Cancer Care Centre at the James Cook Hospital in Middlesborough. This included the main reception desk, privacy screens in the waiting area, workstations in the Linak control rooms, specialist storage and IPS systems in the bunker rooms and associated utility areas.

Designers Comment

“Particularly rewarding was the client’s immediate endorsement of the lavender theme. This flows from the main reception right through into the bunker rooms and provides an abstract contribution to this healing environment. Another Receptek contribution has been the introduction of the suspended ‘Halo’ above the main reception. Due to the space being double storey the halo helps draw visitors to the reception point and creates a more welcome feel.”

Receptek proposed the use of recycled glass for the worktops on the main reception desk. The net result is stunning with what appears and feels like stone yet without the typical joining issues associated with stone. It was a real challenge to maintain the overall design intent and balance the budget. But we did it.
